Madhya Pradesh: Varieties Of Gajak & Sesame Treats Take Over Markets Before Makar Sankranti |

Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): As Makar Sankranti approaches, the markets are filled with the delightful aroma of sesame-based sweets like Gajak and laddoos, one of the favourite snacks for central India.

Sweet shops are also busy preparing a variety of treats, including gajak, til ke laddoo, kaju rolls, kaju patti, and til barfi, etc. Jabalpur is producing as much as 50 to 60 kilograms of the sweets per day.

The cold weather has led to an increase in demand, with shops showcasing a wide variety of til-based sweets. Despite a rise in the cost of sesame and jaggery sweets in recent years, people tend to be addicted to these delicacies.

Over 15 varieties this year

This year, over 15 types of gajak are available in the market for the festival. Among these, plain gajak and til laddoos are in the highest demand, as these sweets are special for Makar Sankranti.

Gajak sellers are optimistic about good sales this year, as the chilly weather has brought more people to the markets. They expect good business at this festival.

Makar Sankranti holds special importance for sesame. On this day, people not only eat sweets made from sesame and jaggery but also donate them as a symbol of good deeds. After taking a holy bath, many prepare offerings of black and white sesame treats to share with others.

This timeless tradition ensures that the festival remains rich with meaning, sweetness, and community spirit.
