US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday signed a $142bn (£107bn) defence agreement. The US will provide “state-of-the-art warfighting equipment” to Saudi Arabia, who will in turn invest $20bn (£15bn) in artificial intelligence in the US, as part of the pact. The US president is on his first leg of a major diplomatic four-day tour to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE.
The White House in a statements said, “The United States and Saudi Arabia signed the largest defense sales agreement in history—nearly $142 billion, providing Saudi Arabia with state-of-the-art warfighting equipment and services from over a dozen US defense firms.”
The deal spans five key areas: 1) Air force modernisation and space capabilities. 2)Air and missile defense systems. 3) Maritime and coastal security infrastructure. 4) Border security and land force upgrades. 5) Information and communication systems enhancement.
