US President-Elect Donald Trump (L) and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau | FPJ Web Team

US President-Elect Donald Trump, who is known for his trait for making global leaders uncomfortable, appeared to have stuck on with the habit as he called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ‘Governor Justin Trudeau’ of the ‘Great State of Canada’. He appeared to reduce PM Trudeau, leader of the Canadian government, to merely a provincial leader. Trump made the comment on TruthSocial, the social media platform he himself owns.

Trump has already threatened that he would impose heavy tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada to ensure US-made products get boost in competition in domestic market. Trump has threatened of tariffs as high as 25 per cent.

Trump and Trudeau recently had a dinner with Trudeau at the former’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The meet took place on November 30 and Trump’s post on TruthSocial post mocking Trudeau was made 10 days after the actual meet. The time period between the two events has given rise to speculation if the social media post was made after political calculations rather than it being just an off-the-cuff remark Trump is known for.

After his dinner with Trump on November 30, Trudeau told US media that the talk with Trump “was an excellent conversation.” He did not specifically say if the two leaders spoke about the issue of tariff.

Trump on his part, said that the meeting was ‘very productive’. In a post made on November 30 after the dinner, Trump mentioned Trudeau’s name as ‘Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada’.

With Trump’s victory in US Presidential Election 2024, it is widely excepted that there will be resurgence of isolationism in the country with the most powerful nation in the world limiting and even reducing its role in global affairs. This, in turn is feared to make way for increase Chinese and Russian influence in the world.
