Donald J Trump is just another 11 days away from a historic return to the White House. Long before occupying the Oval Office, Trump has created tremors all across the board, from his bizarre appointments to bellicose foreign and diplomatic (or lack of it) policy ideas.
Meanwhile, as the world gears up for a second Trump Presidency, the US equity markets, one of the world’s most consequential markets ended the trading day on Wednesday, January 8, on a rather cautious note.
Although Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 closed the day in green, the end figures could be far from appreciable. All this while the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite closed in red with marginal losses.
Dow Jones Industrial Average
When we look closely into these indices, the Dow Jones closed in green on 42,635.20 points, after gaining 0.25 per cent or 106.84 points.
S&P 500
The S&P 500 also had a similar story to tell. The index closed with gains of 0.16 per cent or 9.22 points. The index closed at 5,918.25 points.
Nasdaq Composite
The tech-heavy Nasdaq had a relatively underwhelming day at the bourse. The index closed in red unlike the other two.
The index closed at 19,478.88. However, the overall losses incurred in the intraday trade were relatively minor. The index closed with a decline of 0.055 per cent or 10.80 points.
Russell 2000 Index
The Russell 2000, which is another major index that houses major medium-scale businesses closed with greater losses on Wednesday.
This index closed in red with losses of 0.48 per cent or 10.84 points. This index closed on 2,238.96 points.
Crude Oil Prices
This also comes at a time, when a lower OPEC production of crude oil and high demand for fossil fuel due to winter woes are increasing the prices of crude oil globally.
The benchmark Brent Crude oil rose to USD 76.16 per barrel in the previous day’s settlement.
The WTI Index closed the previous session at USD 73.32, however, it needs to be noted, that the prices have dropped on Thursday (as per IST).
