America’s foreign policy has always been a puzzle. On the one hand, he claims the help of friendly countries, on the other hand he does not hesitate to ignore any country for his selfishness or to make a goat of sacrifice. The fresh example of this is the latest controversy at the White House between US President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodimir Jailonski.

But this story is not limited to Ukraine and America only. After seeing the changing attitude of America towards India and Pakistan, it becomes clear that America’s friendship is not permanent, but it determines relationships based on its interests.

Trump-Jalensky controversy in White House: A new twist

On 28 February 2025, the meeting of Trump and Jailonsky at the Oval Office of the White House remained the attention of the whole world. The meeting was to sign an agreement on Ukraine’s mineral resources, but the conversation soon turned into a sharp debate.

  • Trump demanded “gratitude” to Ukraine’s US financial assistance.
  • He pressurized Jailonsky to compromise a peace with Russia and said, “You don’t have much option.”
  • Jailonsky said not to trust Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and asked for a guarantee of Ukraine’s security.
  • Trump got angry and wrote on social media, “Jailonsky insulted America. When they are ready for peace, come. “

It became clear from this incident that US foreign policy focuses on using allies for their selfishness.

Assistance to Pakistan, ban on India: double standards of US policy

This attitude of America is not new. It has been seen many times in history that it has repeatedly given military and financial assistance to Pakistan, while India faced restrictions several times.

1971 Indo-Pak war: America is kind to Pakistan

  • During the Indo-Pak war in 1971, the US openly supported Pakistan.
  • The United States sent the seventh fleet of its Navy to the Bay of Bengal to put pressure on India.
  • But India failed this American strategy with a military treaty with the Soviet Union.

1998 Pokhran Nuclear Testing: Ban on India, Pakistan exempted

  • India conducted Pokhran-2 nuclear tests in 1998, after which the US imposed strict economic and military sanctions on India.
  • Pakistan conducted nuclear tests a few weeks later, but soon got American help.

American cooperation to Pakistan after 2001

  • After the 9/11 attacks, the US needed Pakistan to carry out military operations in Afghanistan.
  • The US lifted most of the restrictions imposed on Pakistan and gave it billions of dollars military assistance.
  • Pakistan used this help to support anti -India terrorist organizations, but the US kept silence on it.

Return from Afghanistan and Pakistan again

  • In 2021, the US returned from Afghanistan, after which Pakistan was again seen as a strategic partner.
  • At the same time, reports of business tension and delay in defense deals with India started coming out.

This double attitude is similar to the Trump-Jalensky controversy-where the US uses its colleagues for its own selfishness and shore as soon as the need is over.

“America First” Policy: Who is his real friend?

Trump’s “US First” policy has shown that America’s friendship is only based on commercial and strategic benefits.

  • From Ukraine, Trump asked for $ 350 billion back, saying that Ukraine should make a peace agreement with Russia.
  • With India, the US delayed several defense deals and gave air to business disputes.
  • Pakistan was re -assisted as it could meet American strategic interests in Afghanistan and Central Asia.

That is, America’s friendship is not permanent, but a situation.

What should India learn?

1. Self -sufficient defense policy has to be adopted

  • Instead of being completely dependent on the US, India will have to make its defense and military strategy self -reliant.
  • Buying the S-400 missile system from Russia and developing indigenous weapons are steps in the right direction.

2. Multilateral diplomacy must be strengthened

  • India should strengthen its role on forums like Quad, BRICS and SCO.
  • Relying only on America can be dangerous.

3. Economic self -sufficiency has to be focused

  • India will have to strengthen its industry and technology sector amidst the US-China trade war.
  • India’s participation in the global supply chain will have to increase.
