The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has recently issued new guidelines regarding UPI ID for banks, UPI payment apps and third-party UPI service providers. These new mobile verification rules will be applicable from April 1, 2025. The purpose of these new rules is to increase the stability of the system, make it more user friendly and to reduce transaction errors associated with mobile number changes.
What to do to banks and UPI applications
Banks and UPI applications have to update their mobile number records every week, ie to prevent errors caused by recycled or revised numbers, meanwhile the application will have to get permission from users before specifying or updating the numeric UPI ID. Users must actively opt-in to use this feature, as the default setting is opt-out. To avoid confusion in users, applications have been banned from demanding consent during transactions.
If the verification system of NPCI is delayed, the UPI apps can temporarily solve numeric UPI ID problems among other things. However, these matters should be documented for the purpose of monitoring and reported to NPCI every month.
What happens to re -cycled or changed numbers?
According to the rules of the Department of Telecommunications (DOT), once the connection is cut, the mobile number can be re -assigned to new users after 90 days. Telecom providers usually deactivate a number when the customer does not use any activity (call, message or data) for three consecutive months. Such re -divided numbers are called recycled or churned numbers.
Apps supporting UPI transactions will now require permission before linking or transferring your UPI number. Your bank-satisfied mobile number acts as your UPI identifier, which allows you to make transactions using various UPI apps.
