Delhi High Court has given a big blow to former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case. The court on Monday refused to extend the interim bail granted to Sengar on medical grounds. The court ordered that Sengar surrender on January 20.
A division bench of Justices Naveen Chawla and Shailinder Kaur made it clear that the court is not considering Sengar’s plea and he should be taken into custody. On the other hand, the victim’s lawyer alleged that she was given an application only for speedy hearing.
Debate on suspension of sentence
Sengar’s lawyer, who is serving a 10-year sentence in the custodial death case of the victim’s father besides rape, argued that Sengar has already spent a lot of time in jail despite his appeal being pending. He appealed to the court to suspend the remaining sentence.
interim bail case
Sengar was granted interim bail for two weeks on medical grounds in December 2024, which was later extended by one month. However, on January 17, another bench had refused to extend this bail further. The High Court had made it clear that Sengar would have to surrender under any circumstances on January 20.
Sengar’s lawyer informed that he will surrender before the authorities at 5:30 pm.
