Unique Chimi Lhakhang Temple of Bhutan: Where is considered a symbol of gender, auspicious and protector

In India, people hang a lemon-chicken or nazarbattu outside their homes or shops to protect them from evil eyesight. But there are some places in the world where amazing and different symbols are used to protect against evil. One such unique example is Bhutan, where pictures of gender (male genitalia) and wooden models are installed outside many houses, shops and temples.

Chimi Lhakhang: Ancient Fertility Temple of Bhutan

The Chimi Lhakhang temple located in Bhutan is known as the fertility temple. This temple is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Qunale, which the locals know as ‘Divine Madman’. This name turned because he was so absorbed in devotion to God that he did not care about social rules and traditions.

According to a belief, Lama Drukpa Qunale killed a demon with a symbol of his divine gender. Since then, the penis came to be considered a symbol of getting children, fertility and protection from evil spirits.

Religious and cultural recognition

Local people believe that the figure of the penis protects the house from evil spirits and evil eyes. This symbol is also considered auspicious for women who wish to have children. The devotees who come here perform special worship in the temple and receive blessings.

This temple was built by the 14th Druukpa Navanga Chogyal. There is also a stupa inside the temple which was installed by a yogi. According to religious belief, Drukpa Qunale defeated a ghost with a pen -shaped pole, which later turned into a dog. This dog was placed in the stupa built in the temple.

  • The Chimi Lhakhang temple is located in Lobaa village of Punakha district of Bhutan.

  • Private taxis can be used to reach here.

  • To reach the temple, one has to walk through paddy fields.

  • Photography is not allowed in the temple premises.

  • It is necessary to maintain peace here and not talk in a loud voice.

  • Shoes have to be removed to enter the temple.
