The visit of Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to Nashik tomorrow is of great significance for farmers. Onion-growing farmers in the district are demanding the removal of the 20 per cent duty imposed on onion exports.
Since red onions have a limited shelf life, their export is restricted. As a result, farmers are hesitant to export onions. Against this backdrop, farmers’ organisations have urged the Union Minister to remove the export duty.
Kuber Jadhav, an office-bearer of the Maharashtra Onion Growers Association, has made this demand in a letter to Goyal.
Earlier, MPs from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) had also raised the same demand in the Lok Sabha.
It remains to be seen whether the farmers’ demands will be addressed.
