Mumbai: A 50-year-old unidentified man allegedly died by suicide in the Ranakpur Express on Wednesday. The railway staff discovered the body in the toilet of a general compartment. The deceased was allegedly found hanged with clothes tied to a hook in the train’s toilet. His identity remains uncertain as no documents or mobile phone were found with him. The Mumbai Central Railway Police registered an accidental death report on the same day.
According to the police, the Ranakpur Express runs from Lalgarh Junction, Rajasthan to Dadar Western. On January 29, the express arrived at Dadar around 7:30 am. Around 10:30 am, the railway staff entered the train to clean and inspect the compartments, as it was scheduled to depart for Lalgarh again.
During the inspection, the staff found that a toilet door was locked from the inside. They immediately informed the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The RPF knocked on the door and asked if someone was inside, but there was no response. They then used tools like a screwdriver to open the door and found an unidentified body hanging from a hook. Soon after, the railway police also arrived at the scene.
The police said that the man appeared to belong to the labour class, as they did not find anything near the body except a bidi. He had made a rope using clothes and hanged himself from a hook. Since the door was locked from the inside, other passengers might not have noticed, or he may have hanged himself after the passengers had alighted from the train. The police are trying to ascertain his identity and trace his relatives. His body was sent to Sion Hospital, and the post-mortem report revealed that he died due to hanging.
