The US and Russia were seen standing together on a new proposal in the United Nations (UN) over the Russia-Ukraine war. This is the first time the US tried to stop Ukraine’s proposal, while European countries and G7 (except the US) supported it to pass it.

The proposal sought to end the ongoing war in Ukraine, Russia’s military return and peaceful solutions. However, 18 countries, including the US, voted against it, while 65 countries including India and China distanced them from voting.

Result of voting on UN proposal

  • 93 countries voted in favor of the proposal. These included Germany, Britain, France and other countries of G7 (except America).
  • 18 countries voted against the proposal, including the US, Russia, Israel and Hungary.
  • 65 countries including India, China, Brazil did not participate in voting.

America’s changed strategy: different stand from European countries

This was the first time in the three years of the Russia-Ukraine War when the US took a different stand from European countries. Earlier, Washington was always standing with Europe, but this time he tried to stop Ukraine’s proposal.

This change indicates a new stance and strategy in the US foreign policy, indicating that Washington is now adopting a slightly different view from European colleagues.

United Nations General Assembly’s attitude: Demand for immediate military withdrawal from Russia

After the passage of the proposal, the United Nations General Assembly demanded Russia to immediately remove its army from Ukraine.

  • 93 countries supported the 193 -member General Assembly.
  • The proposal is not legally binding, but is considered an indicator of global referendum.
  • Earlier proposals had condemned Russia by more than 140 countries and demanded the removal of its army from four Ukrainian regions.

India and China again adopted ‘neutral policy’

India and China did not cast any vote on this proposal, making it clear that the two countries are still adopting neutral policy on the Ukraine crisis. India is constantly on a strategy to maintain balance between Russia and Western countries, while China also does not want to spoil its relations with Russia.

Is there increasing differences between America-Europe?

The US voting against this proposal is considered a shock for European countries. This indicates that Washington can now take a slightly different stance from its colleagues about the Russia-Ukraine war.

Now the thing to see will be whether it was just a temporary strategic step or the beginning of the real cracks in America and Europe relationships.
