A woman in Derby, UK, attracted a huge fine of two lakh rupees for delaying her payment at a parking place. She took more than the allotted time to pay the amount at the car parking, noting only five minutes were provided to every driver to complete the transaction and exit the spot.
When Rosey Hudson took her phone to pay the parking authorities, she claimed the device had poor signal which didn’t let her pay quickly.
Poor signal
Rosey mentioned that the poor signal on her phone delayed the payment process and made her exceed the time limit of five minutes. She said so while pointing out that she tried stepping out of the car and walking around to catch better network. By the time the woman actually managed to get phone signal and process the fee, the Excel Parking had also issued her notices for surpassing the time bracket determined to allow car drivers to park there.
10 parking charge notices
According to reports, the parking lot had issued her 10 parking charge notices after she took more than five minutes to settle the parking fee.
The five-minute rule to pay
A representative of the Excel Parking was quoted in media reports as saying, “The sign at the car park made it clear that it was ‘Pay on Entry’ and that there was a maximum period of five minutes to purchase the parking tariff. It is the driver’s responsibility to read and understand the terms”.
The UK woman found the five-minute rule unfair. She condemned it and took to court. The case of Rosey and the parking space is said to be heard in court within six months.
