Why was Abu Azmi suspended?

Abu Azmi was suspended from the budget session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly as he had made remarks related to the praise of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb.

What did Abu Azmi say?

  • He said that Aurangzeb was not a ‘cruel administrator’.
  • He claimed that Aurangzeb built several temples.
  • He said that Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Aurangzeb’s fight was about ‘state administration’, not Hindu-Muslim struggle.

What did the government say?

  • Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil said that Azmi’s statement hurt the dignity of the House.
  • The proposal to suspend his membership was brought to the House and approved.

Akhilesh Yadav objected

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav opposed Abu Azmi’s suspension and posted on ‘X’ and said,

“If the basis of suspension starts to be affected by ideology, then what will be the difference between freedom of expression and subordination?”

He said that our MLAs and MPs are fearless and intelligent, and their words cannot be forced.
