NMMC Chief Dr. Kailas Shinde inspects Turbhe Solid Waste Management Facility ahead of Swachh Survekshan 2024 | X – @NMMConline

Navi Mumbai: Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) scientifically managed solid waste management project at Turbhe MIDC, regarded as one of the best in the country, is set to become even more advanced.

With the commencement of Swachh Survekshan 2024 assessments, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, accompanied by City Engineer Shirish Ardawad, conducted a detailed inspection of the project site to ensure its efficiency and cleanliness.

Under the Super Swachh League, NMMC has been making dedicated efforts to enhance the city’s cleanliness ranking through active public participation. During his visit, Dr. Shinde emphasized the importance of internal cleanliness at the site and instructed officials to enhance hygiene standards.

He also directed that additional open spaces be identified for further tree plantation, complementing the existing green cover that includes a large bamboo plantation.

The Turbhe solid waste management facility processes approximately 750 metric tons of waste daily. Organic waste is converted into compost, while dry waste is repurposed into Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) for supply to chemical industries, cement factories, and thermal power stations.

The facility also processes empty coconut shells to extract cocopeat, which is used in nurseries and gardens, while the extracted fibers are repurposed for cushions and sculptures. Additionally, recyclable materials are sent to the MRF (Material Recovery Facility) Recycling Industry.

To raise awareness about scientific waste management, Dr. Shinde recommended organizing educational visits for school students to the site, helping them understand the process firsthand.

Meanwhile, efforts to modernize the Construction and Demolition (C&) Waste Processing Site are in full swing. The Commissioner directed that upgrades be fast-tracked and called for increased community participation.

He also suggested implementing regulations requiring contractors to utilize crushed sand, graded aggregates, and paving blocks derived from processed waste in municipal construction projects.

Dr. Shinde further instructed officials to expedite planned waste-to-energy and waste-to-gas projects aimed at making waste disposal more sustainable.

“The Turbhe solid waste management project plays a critical role in maintaining Navi Mumbai’s top ranking in cleanliness, and hence efforts are being made to incorporate cutting-edge technologies to enhance the facility’s efficiency and environmental impact,” a NMMC officer said.
