Former US President Donald Trump has once again accused India of imposing high customs (tariffs). He said that India is one of the highest charge countries in the world. However, he also clarified that he had good relations with India.
Trump’s statement about Indo-US trade
Trump discussed Indo-US business relationships in an interview to Brightbart News. When he was asked about his recent talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said:
“I have very good relations with India, but my only problem is that India is one of the most tariffs in the world.”
Why is Trump angry with India?
- Trump said he hopes India will cut its tariff soon.
- He warned that if India did not reduce the fee, the US would impose counter tariffs from April 2.
- Earlier, Trump has criticized the high tariffs imposed by India on American products and has called India ‘Tariff King’.
- At a press conference with PM Modi at the White House, he also described India’s tariff rules as “quite strict”.
What is the attitude of India?
Unlike Trump’s allegations, the Government of India says that talks are still going on at the trade fee.
- India’s Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said in front of the Parliamentary Committee that there is no final agreement between the two countries regarding tariffs.
Trump’s opinion on IMEC
Trump described the India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a group of strong countries.
- He said that this group is united to combat countries that harm the US in business.
- Trump also added,
“We can’t treat friends better than our enemies.”
What will happen next?
Tension may increase between India and the US due to trade fee, but the governments of the two countries are trying to withdraw the middleway. Trump’s warning can bring a new twist in Indo-US trade relations.
