Mumbai: Australia batter and perpetual India nemesis Travis Head is being pilloried after he made a seemingly vulgar gesture when he got Rishabh Pant to sky a ball to Mitch Marsh in the outfield. Travis repeatedly shoved his index finger through a circle he made with the thumb and forefinger of his other hand, suggesting that he was simulating sexual activity.

The quirky gesture caught the attention of cricket fans across the world and they lashed out at Head who went on the back foot and described it as a ‘finger on the ice’ gesture.

“I didn’t expect that I’d be bowling. I thought my next bowling stint would be against Sri Lanka. So, I thought I’ll go put it down in a little cup of ice, be ready to go up there next,” he added, referring to Australia’s upcoming tour of the island nation.

Australian Skipper Pat Cummins On Head’s Theory

Australia skipper Pat Cummins seconded Head’s theory. “I can explain it. His finger is so hot he’s got to put it in a cup of ice. Yeah that’s what it is,” Cummins told reporters.

Former Indian Batter Navjot Singh Sidhu On The ‘Finger’ Gesture

Former India batter Sidhu was not entirely pleased with Head’s histrionics and called for stringent punishment for insulting Indian sentiments. “Travis Head’s obnoxious behaviour during the course of the Melbourne Test doesn’t auger well for the gentleman’s game…sets the worst possible example when there are kids, women , young & old watching the game,’’ Sidhu posted on X.
