Pune-based transgender activist Sarang Punekar passed away on Wednesday.

Sarang completed her education from Pune University. She was a poet from Pune and had participated in many movements. During the lockdown, she did significant work for the underprivileged in Pune. She was a first student of the university from the transgender community.

“It is with great shock that I received the news of the sad and untimely death of Sarang Punekar — a transgender activist who fought for inclusivity against the cultures of ignorance and exclusion. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends of Sarang Punekar,” Ambedkar wrote.

She was also the regional spokesperson of the Youth Congress, but later resigned from the post. Several people, including VBA chief Prakash Ambedkar, expressed condolences to Punekar.
