In a heartbreaking turn of events, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) umpire Prasad Malgonkar, aged 60, tragically collapsed and died while officiating an Under-19 Bhama Cup match on Tuesday,April 15. The incident occurred during the clash between KRP XI CC and Crescent CC at Cross Maidan’s Sunder Cricket Club ground.
Malgonkar, who was on duty at square leg during the 11th over of the game, suddenly collapsed two deliveries into the over. Earlier in the day, he had reportedly mentioned feeling unwell but chose to continue officiating.
Speaking to Mid Day, Parthamesh Angane, who was umpiring alongside Malgonkar said, “He told me he was experiencing some acidity before the toss. I asked him to take rest, but he insisted he could manage. He was fine for the first ten overs, but suddenly at 10.2 overs, he collapsed and had trouble breathing.”

According to the report, MCA match coordinator Datta Mithbavkar led the emergency response, aided by fellow officials and players. He said, “With the help of Ibrahim sir, players like Salman Khan, Barun Saw, and Pravin bhai, we carried him on a charpai from the ground to National CC, and from there, we rushed him by taxi to Bombay Hospital. Unfortunately, I believe he passed away before we reached.”
According to the report, Malgonkar was brough to Bombay Hospital, where medical staff confirmed that he was brought in without a detectable pulse or oxygen level. The ECG machine showed no signs of activity, and his pupils were unresponsive. Doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival. The hospital did not conduct a postmortem, as the family presented a death certificate issued by their personal physician.
