Potato, onion and tomato are the main vegetables in the country. The prices of tomatoes are being discussed everywhere. The price of tomato has reached Rs 300 per kg in the retail market. There is hue and cry in the market because of the high prices of tomatoes.

People have stopped eating tomatoes. Some people have given up eating tomatoes in salads. The Central Government on Sunday reduced the subsidized rate of tomato from Rs 90 per kg to Rs 80 per kg in Delhi-NCR and retail markets. Now instead of Rs 90 per kg, tomatoes will be sold late at Rs 80 per kg at the government rate.

NCCF has procured tomatoes from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as per the guidelines of the government. Retail outlets have been set up in areas like Okhla and Nehru Place.

Tomato prices touched Rs 250 per kg in major cities in the retail markets on Saturday due to monsoon rains and poor weather. According to government data, the all-India average price was around Rs 117 per kg.

To provide relief to retail consumers, the Center is selling tomatoes at a discount of Rs 90 per kg in select cities such as Delhi-NCR, Patna and Lucknow. About 18,000 kg was sold through mobile vans in Delhi-NCR on Saturday. Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh tweeted, “Apart from various parts of Delhi and Noida, sale of tomatoes at subsidized rates started in Lucknow, Patna and Muzaffarpur.
