News India Live, Digital Desk: Toll tax: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is going to make major changes in the current system of toll recovery in the country. Under this scheme, there is now a preparation to finish toll plazas on National Highways and Expressway across the country. The Ministry has considered this task to banks instead of toll agencies for toll collection.
What will be the new toll recovery model?
Out of the 1.5 million km long national highway network across the country, there are currently 1063 toll plazas at about 45,000 kilometers. The ministry is now planning to close these plazas and in return for toll collection with GPS based and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) technology. With this, the vehicles will be able to pay the toll fee without stopping and there will be a lot of time for the passengers.
Banks will get toll collection responsibility
The ministry has contacted public sector banks under this new model. The issue has been discussed with many public sector banks, and these banks will use ANPR technology for toll recovery. In addition to collecting toll charges, banks will also have to purchase and establish high quality cameras.
How will AnPR system work?
In the ANPR technology, the vehicle number plate is identified automatically by cameras, which will be deducted without any obstruction. The toll fee will be first received by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), after which it will go to the banks. The ministry will also decide how long the bank will be able to keep this amount.
What will be the benefits of new models?
- Vehicles will get the benefit of travel without stopping due to the end of toll plaza.
- Time and fuel will be saved.
- Transparency in toll collection will increase.
- The toll collection process will be made more systematic through the banking system rather than toll agencies.
The government will soon finalize the model of this scheme, which will provide better facilities to the people traveling on the highways of the country.
