Thane: In a massive crackdown on plastic usage, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) conducted a special drive in the light of the Holi festival, seizing 78 kg of single-use plastic and collecting ₹27,500 in fines from vendors across the city’s three divisions.

Accroding to the Civic officials, an operation was initiated to curb single use plastic in the light of Holi celebrations and environmental hazards caused by plastic. However, an operation involving an officials and employees from solid waste management department and different wards.

Manisha Pradhan, an officer from the Pollution Control Cell of TMC, said, “The team visited a total of 1,002 establishments in the Naupada, Wagale Estate, and Majiwada-Manpada areas within TMC limits, inspected them, seized a total of 78 kg of single-use plastic, and collected ₹27,500 from them.”

TMC officials said that officials from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and the Pollution Control Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation had conducted a special campaign to curb single-use plastic from April 1, 2024, to March 6, 2025. In the meantime, they inspected a total of 4,180 establishments, seized 2,139 kg of plastics, and collected a fine of over ₹ 13 lakh.

The action aimed to curb environmental hazards caused by plastic and encourage citizens to adopt eco-friendly alternatives like cloth bags, said an official.
