Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Dulal Sarkar was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Jhaljhalia More area of West Bengal’s Malda district on Thursday morning.
Dulal Sarkar, a councillor from Ward Number 22 of English Bazar Municipality in Malda, was killed when bike-borne assailants fired multiple shots at him. The attack occurred in broad daylight at a busy intersection in the area.
A video of the incident has surfaced online, showing the assailants chasing and shooting at Sarkar.
The unidentified attackers, who had covered their faces with helmets, fled the scene after shooting Sarkar in the head. He was rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital in critical condition, but he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
According to reports, Sarkar was standing at a busy crossing when three helmet-clad men arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire. While multiple bullets missed him, one struck him in the head.
The broad daylight attack on the TMC councillor in a crowded street has created an atmosphere of fear in the area.
Police have filed a case against the unidentified shooters and launched a search operation to apprehend the culprits.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over the killing of the TMC councillor. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mamata wrote: “My close associate and a very popular leader, Babla Sarkar, has been murdered today. From the beginning of the Trinamool Congress, he (and his wife, Chaitali Sarkar) worked hard for the party, and Babla was also elected as a councillor.”
“I am deeply saddened and shocked by this incident. The culprits must be brought to justice immediately. I am so heartbroken that I struggle to find the words to convey my condolences to the bereaved family. May God give Chaitali the strength to endure this loss and fight through this difficult time,” she added.
