Earthquake in Tibet: A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Shigasate, one of Tibet’s holiest cities, on Tuesday. The earthquake caused devastation and reduced the entire city to ruins. 126 people have died and 188 people have been injured in this earthquake. According to the report, more than 100 small earthquakes were felt in just 9 hours. Along with Tibet, earthquake tremors were also felt in neighboring country Nepal, due to which buildings started shaking and people came out of their homes in fear.

There are a total of 27 villages around the epicenter of the earthquake in Tibet, whose total population is 61 thousand. Collapsed buildings, debris, collapsed roads and cars can be seen in videos surfaced on social media. This earthquake has caused devastation everywhere. The death toll is likely to rise further due to the fact that the earthquake was located at a very high altitude.

The China Earthquake Network Center (CENC) said the earthquake’s magnitude was 6.8, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) put it at 7.1. The earthquake struck at 9:05 a.m. (Beijing time) Tuesday in Dingri County, Shigaste, China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, according to the regional disaster relief headquarters. Its center was in the city of Sogo, Dingari County, Shigasate.

Shigaste is located 90 km north-east of Lobutse in the Khumbu Himalaya in north-eastern Nepal and is Tibet’s last border town, not far from the Nepal-Tibet-India tri-junction. This area is adjacent to the border of Sikkim. Shigaste is close to the Indian border. Shigasate is considered one of the most sacred cities in Tibet. It is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, the head of Tibetan Buddhism. The Panchen Lama is the second highest spiritual leader of Tibet after the Dalai Lama.

 

Earthquake tremors were felt in Nepal also

CENC said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake was also felt in Nepal where buildings were damaged. However, there were no casualties. Footage broadcast on Chinese television showed people, including children, being pulled from the debris and taken on stretchers to a medical camp.

Xi Jinping gave this order

More than 3,400 rescue workers and 340 medical personnel have been sent to the quake-hit area, officials said at a news conference after the quake. Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered to make every possible effort for relief and rescue operations in the affected areas.
