Mumbai: The Amboli police have arrested three individuals for allegedly attacking an elderly woman and her sister with an iron pestle during a robbery attempt in Andheri West.
The accused were apprehended at Hyderabad railway station and brought to Mumbai on Saturday. The suspects have been identified as Ajit Mukhiya, Saroj Mukhiya, and Vishnu Mukhiya, all in their 20s and residents of Darbhanga, Bihar. Police confirmed that the three are relatives.
About The Case
The Andheri court has remanded the accused to police custody until January 15. A police officer stated, “Saroj is the main culprit. He planned the robbery, and during its execution, Ajit attacked the elderly women. We have recovered ornaments and cash from them.”
The incident occurred on January 7 between 3.30 pm and 4.50 pm at the Gypsy Rose Building in Shastri Nagar Number One, Andheri West. The victims, Shobha Rekhari, 74, and her sister-in-law Bina Bhatt, 67, reside in flat number 703 on the seventh floor. On Tuesday, some relatives visited Rekhari. Since their regular servant was unavailable, Ajit was hired as temporary help. Around 3.30 pm, while Rekhari was resting in the bedroom, she heard her sister Bhatt screaming.
Rushing out, she saw Ajit striking Bhatt on the head with an iron masala pestle. When Rekhari tried to intervene, Ajit attacked her as well, striking her head, before fleeing the scene. Local residents alerted the Amboli police, who arrived at the scene and rushed the injured women to Kokilaben Hospital.
Teams Formed To Track Down The Accused
The Amboli police formed three to four special teams to track down the accused under the guidance of Senior Police Inspector Sadashiv Nikam and Police Inspector Vasant Devkate. CCTV footage and technical data revealed that Ajit was a resident of Darbhanga, Bihar, and had fled to Hyderabad with his relatives after the attack. The police team travelled to Hyderabad and arrested the accused at Hyderabad railway station. The trio has been charged with multiple offenses, including robbery and assault, and further investigation is underway.
