Mark Zuckerberg of the social media site Meta launched new microblogging threads on Wednesday night. It is designed to compete with Twitter. Some people are also giving it the name of ‘Twitter Killer’. There are 100 million people on Twitter worldwide.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that two million people joined the Threads app in two hours. After four hours its number had reached 50 lakhs. So far this application has been launched in 100 countries. It has not been launched in the European Union due to regulatory concerns.
Similar to Twitter, Threads is a text based conversation app. Allows users to post up to 500 characters and has many other Twitter-like features. However, Threads will be a separate app, in which users will be able to log in with their Instagram account. Their Instagram username will continue here as well, but they can change it as they wish.
Its description given on the App Store states that ‘Different communities will gather on threads’. They will discuss what is happening today and also know what could be the trend tomorrow. The screengrabs attached to the app shown on the App Store are very similar to Twitter. Meta calls its new app an “early version” with more features to come.
Posts on threads can be “easily” shared between the two apps and can contain up to five minutes of video, links and photos. Users will have a feed of posts, which Meta has named “threads”. In this feed, users will see other people’s posts and content.
Users can customize who can see their posts. Also, they can filter out comments on their posts that contain offensive words.
