Mumbai Crime: Thief Sneaks Into Malabar Hill Walkway Ticket Counter, Flees With Valuables; Watch CCTV Video |
Mumbai: Mumbai Police are investigating a theft at the ticket booth of the Malabar Hill forest walkway after CCTV footage of the incident emerged. The viral video allegedly captures an unidentified man entering the ticket counter through a glass window, taking valuables from the cash counter, and fleeing. Despite this evidence, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which manages the walkway, has not yet lodged an official complaint with the police, as per reports.
Theft Caught On CCTV
A video posted on X by Lokshahi Marathi news portal shows exact moments of the alleged theft. The incident reportedly occurred around 11:30 pm on March 21. Police reports indicate that the suspect was first seen wandering near the newly constructed walkway at approximately 11:24 pm. He then got in through a narrow opening in the ticket window to gain access.
Once inside, he took copper wires and other valuable items before unlocking the door from within and escaping. According to a Mid-day report, the theft, completed in about four minutes, was fully captured on the ticket counter’s CCTV cameras.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohit Garg noted that an FIR has yet to be registered. He explained that while the video has been received and officers have been dispatched to verify the situation, the investigation is pending a formal complaint from the BMC, according to the report.
On Monday, officers visited the ticket counter to review the CCTV footage and gather further information. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar acknowledged the theft and told Mid-day that after verifying the CCTV footage, authorities confirmed the incident had taken place.
He added that although no official complaint had been filed with the BMC, instructions had been given to register an FIR and report the matter to Malabar Hill police. Despite the incident, BMC officials have not implemented any additional security measures at the ticket counter.
3,400 Visitors Explore Nature Trail In First 2 Days
Meanwhile, the elevated nature trail at Malabar Hill, inaugurated on Sunday, has received a strong public response. Over 3,400 visitors explored the scenic trail within the first two days, which winds through Kamala Nehru Park and Ferozshah Mehta Garden.
A BMC official reported that all available slots were fully booked by late Sunday morning. Many additional visitors sought tickets to experience the trail, but to prevent overcrowding, the entry is limited to 200 people per hour. The BMC has set the entry fee at Rs 25 per person for a one-hour slot.
