Stromatolite Fossil: Himachal Pradesh, located in the foothills of the Himalayas, has been a very important scientific discovery, which is associated with the origin of early life on Earth. Dr. Ritesh Arya, founder and famous geologist of the Tethis Fossil Museum, has discovered the world’s oldest stromatolite fossil in Jolajorn village of Chambaghat area of Solan district. He claims that this fossil is more than 600 million years old, which will throw new light on the history of life in the ancient sea level.

Living proof of ancient life on earth

According to Dr. Arya, Stormatolites are rocks made of layers of microorganisms, which were once made in shallow parts of the sea. These rocks represent the time when there was a lack of oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere and the concentration of greenhouse gases was very high. These microorganisms gradually started production of oxygen and accelerated the development of life on Earth.

On the basis of these fossils, Dr. Arya concluded that the Solan region was once part of the Tethis Ocean. The Tethis Ocean Gondwana continent (which included the present India, Africa, Australia, South America and Antarctica) and spread to Asia.

Need scientific importance and protection of fossils

These fossils are not only important from geological point of view, but they are also being recognized as a direct proof of the beginning of primitive life in human history. Earlier, Dr. Arya also discovered similar fossils in Dharampur in Solan, Chitrakoot in Haryana and Morni Hills. However, he says that the fossils found in Chambaghat indicate a separate environmental status with their specific levels.

According to Dr. Jagmohan Singh, former General Manager of ONGC, these fossils take us to the era when life came for the first time on earth. Former Head of Department of Geology, Punjab University, Prof. Dr. Arun Deep Ahluwalia has also highlighted the importance of scientific and conservation of these fossils.

Demand to declare fossil heritage site

In the backdrop of this historical discovery, Dr. Arya has written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Solan district and the tourism department demanding that the site be declared ‘State Fossil Heritage Site’. He believes that this step will give a big boost to science, environmental protection and geopolitan.

Need to preserve the invaluable heritage of nature for future generations

According to Dr. Arya, the land of Himachal Pradesh has a maritime history of millions of years, which is a valuable treasure not only for India, but for the entire mankind. Therefore, it is our collective responsibility to protect these places and maintain their scientific value.
