US Vice President JD Vance has said that Green Card holders cannot always live in America. Having a green card does not mean that someone has the right to live in the United States throughout his life. The government has the right to deport the green card holders. He said this in an interview given to a TV channel.
In fact, the green card is legally called permanent resident card. It provides the right to live and work permanently in the United States, provided that the person is not involved in any crime that violates immigration laws. According to American facts, 7.16 lakh Indians received green cards in the US from 2013 to 2022.
Among the people with green cards in the US, Indians are second after Mexicans. In 2022, 1.27 lakh Indians received green cards. Apart from these, more than 12 lakh Indians are waiting for Green Card. Any person can apply for a permanent residence (PR) in the US within 3 to 5 years of receiving a green card.
According to a report by the New York Post, after Vance’s statement, there may be anxiety among the green card holders that they can be suddenly deported. Immigrants who have been living in the US for many years and following legal processes may be afraid that political decisions may affect their permanent residence.
Vance’s comment comes at a time when US President Donald Trump is promoting a visa program called ‘Trump Gold Card’. Under this program, foreign nationals can gain American citizenship by paying $ 5 million, or about Rs 44 crore. Trump has described it as a way to get American citizenship.
Trump described ‘Gold Card’ as an option of EB-5 visa program and said that 1 million gold cards will be sold in future. Currently, the EB-5 visa program is the easiest way to obtain American citizenship. For this, people will have to pay $ 1 million (about 8.75 crore rupees).
According to Trump, this visa card will open the way of US citizenship. People will buy it and come to America and pay a lot of tax here. He claimed that the program would be very successful and the national loan will be repaid soon.
It is noteworthy that a green card is required to reside permanently in the US. There are EB-1, EB-2, EB-3, EB-4 visa programs for this, but the EB-5 visa program is best. This rule has been in force since 1990. In this, a person is not tied to any employer and he can work or study anywhere in America. It takes 4 to 6 months to achieve this.
The EB-4 visa program aims to attract foreign investment. Under this, people will have to invest 1 million dollars in such a business to produce at least 10 jobs. This visa program provides permanent American citizenship to investor, her spouse and children under 21 years of age.
According to reports, the ‘Trump Visa program’ may prove to be expensive for Indians who depended on the EB-5 program to obtain American citizenship. Eliminating the EB-5 program can also cause damage to skilled Indian professionals trapped due to pending green cards for a long time.
Indian applicants under the employment based green card category already have to wait for decades. From the beginning of the gold card, the immigration system can be even more challenging for those who cannot bear its heavy price.
