IndianStudents in Canada: 7 lakh foreign students living in Canada may have to leave Canada next year. The future of these students is uncertain after a decision by the Trudeau government of Canada. Trudeau is very strict regarding tourists. 5 million temporary permits expire in 2025. Out of which 7 lakh permits are for students and due to the strictness, these students may face difficulty in getting the permit due to fees.
Will leave the country after the permit expires
Canadian immigration officials expect most tourists to leave Canada after their permits expire. Canadian Immigration Minister Mark Miller said earlier this week that of the 500,000 permits set to expire, 700,000 are for foreign students who are currently facing challenges due to the Trudeau government’s anti-tourism policies.
Some will also get new work permits,
Not all temporary travelers will be required to leave, Miller said. Some will be given new permits or postgraduate work permits. According to Tourism Canada data, there were more than one million foreign students in Canada as of May 2023. Of these, 3,96,235 had post-graduation work permits till the end of 2023. But Canada is now very strict in giving this permit. As a result, Canada cut international student permits by 35% in 2024. Now the Trudeau government plans to reduce it further by 10% in 2025.
There is no benefit to the country
However, this donation of Trudeau is being opposed in his own country. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized PM Justin Trudeau’s policies, saying they have created uncertainty for temporary residents and are not benefiting the country. It also says that by the end of 2025, about 50 lakh temporary residents may have to leave the country.
