The Central Government has appointed Gyanendra Pratap Singh as the new Director General (DG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). This appointment was made under the departmental order issued on Saturday night. The proposal of the Union Home Ministry was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). “The ACC has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs to appoint GP Singh, a 1991 batch IPS officer of Assam cadre, as the Director General of CRPF,” the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said.

Gyanendra Singh was earlier serving as Assam Police Chief. Now he will fulfill his responsibility as the chief of CRPF. His retirement is scheduled for January 31, 2027.

The new CRPF DG, GP Singh has previously held important positions like Special Protection Group (SPG) and National Investigation Agency (NIA). Apart from this, he has also served in many senior positions in Assam Police.

It is also noteworthy that last month, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had handed over the additional charge of DG of CRPF to 1993 batch IPS officer Vitul Kumar, when the then DG Anish Dayal Singh retired on December 31.

The CRPF is India’s largest paramilitary force with approximately 3,00,000 personnel. The force actively participates in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, counter-insurgency operations in the North-East and anti-Naxal operations in states affected by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE).

The coming year is important for CRPF. The force is playing a vital role in the central government’s efforts to eliminate Naxalites in Chhattisgarh, and is targeted to be completed by March 2026. Currently, more than 40,000 CRPF personnel are deployed in Chhattisgarh.
