Although the decision was taken in August last year, it was implemented during the budget session. There is also heavy opposition after this decision of the Assam government.

End of tradition that has been going on for 90 years

The Himanta Biswa government of Assam has abolished the decades -old tradition of postponing the assembly for prayer. After this, AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam expressed displeasure and said that this is a decision imposed on the basis of number force. He said that there are about 30 Muslim MLAs in the assembly. We had expressed our views against the move, but they (BJP) have a number and they are imposing it on the basis of that. Chairman Vishwajit Daari proposed that keeping in mind the constitution, the Assam Legislative Assembly should conduct its proceedings on Friday like other days and this rule was placed before the committee. Which the committee passed unanimously.

What was the rule?

Under this tradition implemented in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Muslim MLAs were given a two -hour holiday on Friday to offer Namaz. This means that no action was taken in the House during this period. When this rule was changed, the opposition strongly opposed this decision of the House and called it a majority arbitrary.

What did CM Himant Biswa Sarma say?

Following this decision of the Assembly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the decision and said that this tradition was launched by Syed Sadullah of the Muslim League in 1937 and the decision to discontinue the provision gives priority to productivity. In response, Speaker Vishwajit Dahari said that this step has been taken under the secular principles of the Constitution. Like other days, on Friday, the House will work without holiday for prayer.
