Same-sex marriage in Thailand: Gay marriage has got legal recognition in Thailand, the favorite tourist destination of Indians. A law has also been made in the country in this regard, which has come into effect from today i.e. Thursday (23 January 2025). Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia to recognize same-sex marriage. Let us tell you that earlier in Asia, Nepal and Taiwan have recognized gay marriage and now in Thailand also ‘Marriage Equality Act’ has got legal recognition.
Legal recognition of gay marriage in Thailand
Same-sex marriage came into force in the country today and 300 LGBTQ+ newlywed couples took to the streets on the first day of the law coming into force. To date, people from the LGBTQ+ community in Thailand have legal status for same-sex marriage.
The demand was being made for 20 years
It is noteworthy that the LGBTQ+ community in Thailand has been demanding legal recognition of gay marriage for almost 20 years. Which has now been recognized. Now anyone 18 years of age or older can have a same-sex marriage in Thailand.
300 newlyweds stepped into Prabhavati on the very first day
A grand ceremony was held today at a shopping mall in Thailand’s capital Bangkok, where around 300 couples completed their formalities for same-sex marriage. After marriage, couples are given all the rights. The Marriage Equality Act has been passed by both houses of the Parliament of Thailand. Apart from this, the Parliament of Thailand has also amended the Civil and Commercial Code.
Partner will have all rights under law
The Parliament of Thailand has replaced ‘husband and wife’ with ‘personal and marriage partners’ in the Civil and Commercial Code. The law has been amended to give LGBTQ+ couples all the same rights as husband and wife in a normal marriage. It gives equal legal, financial and medical rights to same-sex couples. Apart from this, the right of joint access to the property has also been given.
Where is gay marriage allowed and where is it prohibited?
Today, same-sex marriage is legal in 31 countries around the world, including the United States, Germany, France, and Belgium. There are many countries where gay marriage is completely banned. This includes 13 countries of the world including Yemen, Iran, Brunei, Nigeria, Qatar. There is also a provision for punishment for gay marriage in these countries. Death penalty is given for this. On the other hand, the Supreme Court of India refused to legalize same-sex marriage.
In these countries, gay marriage is not a crime, but it is also not legally recognized.
