After recording one of the hottest January day temperature at 36 degrees Celsius on Saturday and a sharp rise of 3 degrees Celsius in the minimum temperature on Sunday, the mercury in Mumbai is expected to gradually drop this week.
“Mumbai is witnessing sudden change in weather due disturbances in the westerly winds and strong northern winds,” Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai Director Sunil Kamble said. The minimum and maximum temperature in the island city this week will be around 18 degrees and 33 degrees Celsius, he said.
Meanwhile, giving a sigh of relief from hot Sunday afternoon, parts of Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region witnessed drizzles and cool breeze late in the evening. At 8.20 pm, the IMD also issued a warning for light rain spells in isolated parts of Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad. Areas like Dadar, Ghatkopar and Thane witness light rain spells. Private weather interpreter Rishikesh Agre predicted that Mumbai is most likely to witness another winter comeback this week, with the minimum temperature dropping as low as 14-15 degrees Celsius.
On Sunday, Mumbai’s Colaba observatory recorded minimum and maximum temperature of 21.4 and 30.5 degrees Celsius respectively. While, Santacruz observatory recorded minimum and maximum temperature of 19 and 33.2 degrees Celsius respectively. The sky remained misty and partly cloudy.
As per IMD’s forecast as of 8 pm on Sunday, for the next 48 hours the minimum and maximum temperature in Mumbai City and Suburbs will be 17 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius respectively. The sky is likely to be hazy in the morning but will be mainly clear during the day.
With the strong winds and drizzles, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai, which has consistently been under ‘Poor to Very Poor’ category for two weeks, has improved a little. Although the AQI on Sunday was under ‘Moderate’ category, certain areas remained under ‘Poor’ category. As per Central Pollution Control Board recordings, on Sunday evening, some of the areas in Mumbai with the poorest AQI were Ghatkopar (288), BKC (230), Sewri (207) and Shivaji Nagar (237).
