A case of cheating a minor by paying Rs 4,000 for gold jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh has come to light in Kandivali (West).

Police have registered a theft and fraud case against the complainant’s 16-year-old son and his friend. The accused has been identified as Deepak Kavithia. He is currently in police custody, and the stolen gold jewellery is expected to be recovered soon.

According to the police, the complainant, a 50-year-old resident of Kandivali (West), lives with his wife and two children in the Laljipada area. While the complainant owns a vegetable-selling business, his wife is employed in a private job. Their teen son is a Class 11 student at a junior college in Kandivali.

On November 28, the complainant’s wife discovered that various gold ornaments worth around Rs5 lakh were missing from their cupboard locker. She questioned her son, suspecting his involvement, as she had recently noticed him with money. Initially, he claimed to have earned Rs4,000 by playing drums, but his inconsistent responses raised suspicion. Upon further questioning, the son admitted to having sold the gold ornaments to his friend, Deepak Kavithia, for Rs 4,000. He revealed that he had kept Rs 2,000 for himself and handed the remaining Rs 2,000 to his mother.

Kavithia, who works as a drummer and lives in a chawl near Charkop’s Bandarpakhadi Dosti Building in Kandivali, allegedly persuaded the boy to steal the ornaments. On September 1, the boy stole jewellery worth approximately Rs 5 lakh from the cupboard locker and handed it over to Kavithia, receiving Rs 4,000 in return.

When the incident came to light, the complainant lodged a complaint with the Kandivali police against both the son and Kavithia

Following the complaint, the police registered a case of theft and fraud against the duo. Kavithia was arrested. During interrogation, Kavithia confessed to his involvement, stating that he had encouraged the boy to steal the jewellery.

Kavithia was presented before the Borivali local court, which remanded him to police custody. The police have assured that all the stolen jewellery will be recovered soon as the investigation progresses.
