Tannaz Irani, who has starred in several Bollywood movies, including Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, and Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, among others, opened up about her painful journey through hip replacement surgery, which made it difficult for her to walk and left her relying on a wheelchair.
In a recent appearance on Inner Habit podcast, the actress said that she had a problem with walking in 2021, which left her wondering if it was just a patch or perhaps related to weight gain. She even considered visiting a chiropractor for help.
“I just couldn’t get the better of it. Because I thought I was putting on a lot of weight, I joined the MMA which increased the severity of the problem. I didn’t know what was happening, but it was only worsening. Then, there came a time when I just couldn’t even stand up and cook in the kitchen. That’s when I realised there’s something very wrong in the system,” she said.
Further, Tanaaz shared that she underwent treatment for three months and while back got better, she still couldn’t put weight on her leg, which caused her to limp. “I would take my leg and stick it out and put it back in (while walking). That became a motion I mastered so fast and one could sense that there was something amiss. That worsened it. However, being an actress, I didn’t want to give in,” Tannaz added.
Later, she underwent MRIs due to issues with her knees, and by then, everything in her body—her ankles, knees, and back—had been compromised. She was diagnosed with scoliosis and was told she might have AVN, a condition found in alcoholics or those who take steroids, however, she did neither, leaving her confused.
Tannaz also recalled a time she had to rely on a wheelchair during a vacation with her girlfriend, as they didn’t fully understand the severity of her condition, despite being aware of her health struggles. Eventually, she underwent hip replacement surgery.
“After the surgery, on day zero, when they made me stand up, I realised that one leg was longer than the other and I completely freaked out. I screamed, not out loud, but from the bottom of my heart. I just couldn’t believe, for my entire life, I have to walk like this. I felt that this was a cruel joke that somebody was playing on me. I didn’t even want to live anymore,” she concluded.
