School girl chasing bus viral video: A school student was forced to run behind a government bus that did not stop at the designated stop in Tirupattur district in Tamil Nadu recently, leading to a delay in her reaching the exam centre for her board examination. The video of the incident went viral, with public outrage and action from transport authorities being swiftly delivered.

The student was waiting at the Kothakottai bus stop around 8 a.m. so that she could travel to her examination centre at Nimmiyambattu Government Higher Secondary School, which is around three kilometres away. Despite her visible signals, the Tirupattur-Alangayam government bus did not stop, which caused her to run behind it. Eventually, she climbed on the bus—not without significant effort and risk.

Bus driver suspended

Although it is uncertain why the bus was late, the video of the incident spread like wildfire, and people criticized the bus crew for their negligence. In response, officials from the transport department suspended Muniraj, the driver who is a permanent employee, and fired the conductor, Ashok Kumar, who was employed on a contract basis.

The incident has raised questions about the availability and accountability of public transportation, particularly for students during exam seasons. Such oversights must never happen again in the interest of all passengers, the airline’s management must ensure that.

Netizens reaction

After the video went viral on social media netizens filled the comment box with various reactions. One user said, “It was stopped. Why action?. If the bus drove away without stopping then something should have been done.” Another user said, “This is common in Tamil Nadu, school busses often drive rashly and will leave kids behind if they are a few minutes late, and at other places, they will stop for much longer, they drive as their whims and fancies tell them to, there is no sense of responsibility … have faced.” A third user commented, “It’s a shame even after nearly 80 yrs of independence we are seeing such events.” As the video was posted on social media, it gained 157.3K views and 2.6K likes.
