A case has been registered against a doctor from Symbiosis University Hospital & Research Centre in Pune’s Lavale for allegedly demanding ₹20,000 from a patient’s relatives for surgery, officials said on Thursday.

According to the police, Dilip Shivsharan (38), a resident of Uttamnagar, had admitted his aunt to Symbiosis Hospital due to gallbladder pain. The doctor treating her, identified as Pravin Lohate (55), a resident of Chandannagar, informed the relatives that the patient’s condition was very serious and required immediate surgery. For the same, Lohate allegedly demanded ₹20,000 in cash. He reportedly said he would only operate if the amount was paid.

Meanwhile, a case was registered against Lohate after Shivsharan lodged a complaint on Wednesday at the Bavdhan Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

This incident comes just days after Tanisha Bhise, the wife of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLC Amit Gorkhe’s personal secretary, died after she was allegedly refused admission at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital due to non-payment of a ₹10 lakh deposit.
