A Khalistani militant, identified as Narain Singh Chaura attempted to open fire at Sukhbir Singh Badal Attacked |
Chandigarh: It was a swift action in the nick of the time by an Amritsar police ASI Jasbir Singh that averted the assassination bid on Sukhbir Badal who was performing his duty of a “sevadar” at Golden Temple in Amritsar Wednesday.
A Khalistani militant, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, had attempted to open fire at Sukhbir but his act was thwarted by ASI Jasbir Singh and two other cops deployed there in civvies (civilian clothes) who overpowered Chaura within seconds following which Chaura missed the target and could fire in the air only.
Chaura was a few feet away from Sukhbir when he took out a pistol and was about to point towards Sukhbir when an alert Jasbir Singh standing near Sukhbir swung into action clutching Chaura’s both hands thus making him fire the bullet in the air. He was also immediately joined by two other ASIs Rashpal Singh and Parminder Singh to completely overpower Chaura.
Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar also told media that it was the presence of mind of the three cops who thwarted the nefarious design of Chaura who has been arrested and is being interrogated.
Meanwhile, chief minister Bhagwant Mann also said on X: “Punjab Police prevented a major incident from happening today. It is the result of the promptness of the Punjab Police that the conspiracy to defame Punjab and Punjabis has failed. The police achieved great success by arresting the assailant on the spot with their promptness. I appreciate the promptness of the police, I strongly condemn the attack on Sukhbir Badal ji. I have issued strict instructions to the police to immediately investigate the incident and submit a report.’’
