Suriya and Bobby Deol-starrer Kanguva, which received mixed reviews from fans and critics upon its release in November 2024, has made it to the list of contenders for Oscars 2025. The film will compete with over 323 films from around the world.

Film industry tracker Manobala Vijayabalan posted the news of social media and wrote, “BREAKING: Kanguva ENTERS Oscars 2025.” His post also featured the contender’s list and Suriya’s Kanguva poster.

Despite a lot of buzz around its release, the film failed to make a mark at the box office. Kanguva, also starring Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, managed to collect only Rs 106 crore at the box office, globally. The fantasy action drama was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 350 crore.

Soon after the news was shared, Suriya’s fans were overjoyed. However, many were also surprised by the development, given the film’s underwhelming response at the box office.

Kanguva controversy

After much hype, Kanguva hit the big screens on November 14, however, within no time it got embroiled in controversies and negativity.

A day after the film’s release, Suriya’s wife, actress Jyotika, defended the film, stating that the negative reviews seem to be “multiple group propagandas”.

While some people lauded Suriya’s performance and called Kanguva the best movie of his career, others expressed disappointment over extremely loud sound in the film and also criticised its ‘clumsy execution’. Audiences also complained of “headache-inducing sound effects” in the film.
