Hearing in the Supreme Court today was held in the West Bengal Teacher Recruitment Scam case. The Supreme Court has given some exemption to the teachers in its order. Teachers from class 9 to 12 have been allowed to continue their posts for a short period on the condition of continuing academic session. The court has made it clear that no relief will be given to Group C and D employees.

The court provided conditional relief.

The court has placed a condition that the state government can issue advertisements for new recruitment by 31 May. New appointments should be completed by 31 December. The court has said that if this does not happen, it will be strictly investigated. In the judgment given on April 3, 2025, the Supreme Court canceled the appointments of more than 25,000 teachers and school staff of West Bengal. Now, citing the disadvantage of students’ education, teachers have been allowed to work on the request of the state government.

What is a teacher recruitment scam?

In 2016, more than 23 lakh people participated in the recruitment examination conducted by West Bengal School Services Commission. Out of these, more than 25 thousand got jobs. There were large scale allegations of corruption in it. The Supreme Court also said in its judgment that the entire appointment process was filled with fraud in 2016. Former Education Minister and senior TMC leader Partha Chatterjee was arrested in the teacher recruitment scam. Whereas Arpita Mukherjee’s house, who supported him in this scam, received a huge amount of cash. Another senior officer Manik Bhattacharya was arrested in the scam.

Important role of judge

Judge Abhijeet Gangopadhyay had an important role in this scam. In 2021, Justice Abhijeet Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to investigate the irregularities in the teacher recruitment by the West Bengal School Services Commission (WBSSC). He resigned in 2024 and entered politics. The investigation of this scam is still going on, and several raids have been conducted by the CBI and the ED. The matter has exposed the serious problem of corruption in the education and political system of the state.
