A bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and K V Viswanathan, was hearing the suo motu case on RG Kar rape and murder incident which got adjourned till January 29.

According to the apex court sources, CJI said that the hearing is being adjourned due to ‘time constraints’.

Notably, Sealdah sessions court on January 20, had ordered lifetime imprisonment of RG Kar rape and murder convict Sanjoy Ghosh and also asked the state government to give compensation of 17 lakhs to the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, after state government, CBI moves Calcutta High Court demanding capital punishment for RG Kar rape-murder convict Sanjoy Roy challenging the order passed by the lower court.

Counsel who had appeared on behalf of the state government said that the state government has no authority to move the court regarding this matter as the central agency was investigating the matter and also that only the central government is authorized to do so.

RG Kar rape and murder victim’s father on Wednesday once again questioned the promptness of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in demanding death penalty for the convict.

“On August 9 when my daughter died everyone saw the promptness of the state police for cremating the body. Now suddenly what happened that they want the death penalty for Sanjoy Roy? We will have to keep faith in the judiciary and through court will have to get the investigation done by CBI,” said the victim’s father.
