The collegium of the Supreme Court has given great relief to Justice Yashwant Verma of Delhi High Court. Despite the opposition of the lawyers, the way for their Allahabad High Court transfer has been cleared. On Monday, the collegium of the Supreme Court recommended the transfer of Justice Verma.
Recommendation of transfer in Allahabad High Court
The Supreme Court Collegium took this decision in its meetings on 20 and 24 March 2025. The proposal made public said, “The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended to send Justice Yashwant Verma of Delhi High Court back to the Allahabad High Court.”
Allahabad High Court Bar Association protest
The Allahabad High Court Bar Association strongly opposed this decision. The Bar Association said, “We are not dustbins.” Actually, the dispute started when a pile of burning notes was found in Justice Yashwant Verma’s residence in Delhi.
The incident came to light when his domestic servant saw the burning notes and immediately informed the local police. Police reached the spot recorded a video of it, which is now made public.
Is the Allahabad High Court ‘Kuddan’?
A press release issued on Friday said, “We came to know that the Supreme Court has shifted Justice Yashwant Verma to Allahabad High Court on the basis of involvement in corruption.”
The release further stated that the fire department received cash of Rs 15 crore to extinguish the fire in Justice Verma’s bungalow. This news was published prominently in newspapers. After the fire was extinguished, the police recovered a large amount of cash in a room. Questions are being raised about this decision whether the Allahabad High Court is being made a ‘dumping ground’ in a way for judges involved in corruption cases?
Action of Delhi High Court
The Delhi High Court has withdrawn all judicial work from Justice Verma with immediate effect. An official note was issued in this regard, stating that Justice Verma would not see any judicial work until the next order is issued.
In another note related to the suit list on the website of Delhi High Court, it was informed that cases under the bench-III will now be handed over to other judges. The investigation of the case was handed over to Chief Justice DK Upadhyay, whose report found that 4-5 half-bound bundles of Indian currency were found from Justice Verma’s residence.
Justice Verma’s cleanliness
Justice Verma has dismissed all these allegations. He says that “I or any member of my family never kept cash in the store room. This is completely wrong.” However, the matter has raised serious questions about the transparency and fairness of the judiciary.
