The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a copy of the health report of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on an indefinite fast, from the Punjab government, so that the medical board of Delhi AIIMS can take opinion on his condition. Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotishwar Singh’s bench raised the question as to how the health of a person who has been fasting for almost 50 days can be improved.

The bench directed the Chief Secretary of the Punjab Government to present the investigation report of Dallewal before the Registrar of the Supreme Court today itself. Along with this, the court asked the Registrar to send the report to the AIIMS Director, so that the medical board can be consulted on Dallewal’s investigation report.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Punjab government, told the court that some progress has been made in shifting Dallewal to a temporary hospital, which has been set up 10 meters from the protest site. He also said that representatives of the central government are meeting the protesting farmers.

The Punjab government said the protesting farmers have been persuaded to meet the committee headed by Justice (retd) Nawab Singh. Subsequently, 70-year-old farmer leader Dallewal met the apex court-appointed committee on January 6. Dallewal has refused to accept medical aid offered by the Punjab government, due to which his health has recently deteriorated. The farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 last year, after being stopped by security forces from marching towards Delhi.
