Former Indian opening batter Sunil Gavaskar took a dig at the national men’s team after their deflating 3-1 series loss to Australia in the fifth Test in Sydney. With Star Sports’ host Jatin Sapru asking Gavaskar asking whether India could’ve planned better for the Australia tour with their previous home series, the commentator said they hardly care about what ex-cricketers have to say.
Jasprit Bumrah’s absence proved to be a decisive factor for India on day three as their other two pacers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna weren’t as incisive with the ball. Although Krishna briefly troubled the home side, Australia eventually got to the 162-run target with six wickets to spare.
When asked by Sapru on Star Sports on how India should have prepared for the pink-ball Test in Australia, Gavaskar stated:
“Humko kya maalum hai cricket ke baare mein. Humko toh cricket aati hee nahin hai. Hum sirf television ke liye baatein karte rehte hain. Hamaari kaun sunta hai. Irfan aur hum aise hee baat karte rehte hain television ke liye. Hamaari baat sunne ka koi matlab nahin hai. Bas aane dijiye aur upar se chale jaane dijiye. Abhi bhi jo maine kaha, upar se jaane dijiye. Idhar se aane dijiye, idhar se bahar nikal dijiye.”
(“Who are we? We don’t know cricket. We just speak just for the sake of TV and get money, don’t listen to us, we’re nothing. Listen from one ear, remove from another.”)
