The Sufi Islamic Board has denounced the attack on a burqa-clad woman outside a mosque in Davengere, Karnataka, by radical Islamists. The 38-year-old woman was beaten with sticks and pipes by a mob Taliban-style be because her husband questioned her fidelity.
National president of the board Mansoor Khan stated that the shocking “incident makes one wonder as it we are living in Afghanistan or Syria or not in a Constitutionally- governed nation.” He appeals to the Karnataka government to view the incident as a challenge to the laws of the land by Gazwa E Hind gangs in our country.
The incident is part of a larger narrative of moral policing in India, often debated in terms of cultural preservation versus individual freedoms. Noted activist Zakia Soman condemned the incident and demanded that all those wreaked violence on the woman should be booked for attempted murder. She said no religion justifies such violence. If the man suspected the victim’s fidelity, then he had the option of divorcing her. But what happened in Davangera is clearly unacceptable.
