Mexico has imposed a complete ban on junk food in schools to prevent obesity and increasing risk of diabetes. This new rule will come into effect from Monday, under which only nutritious food will be made available in schools.

Government’s strict decision

The Ministry of Education of Mexico announced this decision on social media and wrote,
“Goodbye junk food! This ban will motivate parents to pack home food for their children and adopt healthy food in schools. This is a health revolution for us.”

Mexican Health Secretary Mario Delgado said that the main objective of the new school method is to motivate children to adopt healthy lifestyle. This decision is also getting the support of parents.

How will the new rule be?

  • Nutritious food cooked in schools will be mandatory.

  • Junk food and processed food will be completely banned.

  • Students will only get to drink plain water.

Mexican President Claudia Shinbam supported this policy and said,
“Eating bean teco than potato chips is a more healthy option.”

Growing diseases due to junk food

According to UNICEF report, in Mexico, children eat the most junk food compared to other countries in Latin America. Due to this, the symptoms of obesity and diabetes are seen in them from childhood.

Initiatives taking place around the world

This move of the Mexico government is considered an important example to deal with global obesity epidemic. During the trump administration in the US too, Health Secretary Kennedy Junior campaigned against ultra-prosely food and junk food.
