A taxi driver and a woman passenger died on Saturday afternoon when a speeding car crossed the lane on the Elphinstone flyover and hit an oncoming taxi. The deceased have been identified as Shankar Goliwada, 65 and Rekha Parmar, 55.

The police have not confirmed whether they have made an arrest or if the accused was intoxicated. According to sources, the accused resides in Matunga and is a college student. However, the police have not officially confirmed this yet.

According to the police, On Saturday, at around 1:35 p.m., at Elphinstone Bridge, opposite the International Centre, Dadar West, the driver of a motor car, Priyanshu Bandre, 21, was travelling northbound from Elphinstone Bridge towards Dadar Railway Station when he allegedly drove recklessly at high speed. Suddenly, the car veered onto the southbound lane and allegedly collided with a taxi, resulting in the deaths of a female passenger and the taxi driver. 

As soon as the accident was reported, the local police, traffic police and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and removed the accident-affected vehicles from the road with the help of a crane. The police transported Shankar and Parmar to a nearby hospital. The doctors there declared both of them dead. The police, who are investigating the incident, have registered a case against the car driver Priyanshu for reckless driving at high speed, which caused the death of Shankar and Parmar.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the driver suddenly changed direction while driving recklessly at high speed, leading to the accident.

DCP (Zone 5) Ganesh Gawade stated that the police arrived at the scene, registered a case against the driver, and have launched a further investigation. Due to the accident, traffic on the bridge was disrupted for some time but was restored with the help of the traffic police.
