Varanasi, 18 November (HS). The election campaign in the Majhwan assembly by-election of Mirzapur came to a halt on Monday evening. On Tuesday, a day before voting in the elections, the candidates along with their party officials and supporters have laid full emphasis on door-to-door knocking and distributing the slips. The main contest in the elections is being considered between BJP and SP.

In the election battle, there is Dr. Jyoti Bind from Samajwadi Party (SP), Suchismita Maurya from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Deepak Tiwari ‘Deepu’ from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). BSP candidate Deepak Tiwari has also tried his best to make the fight triangular. But due to the top leadership of the party not being active, they are not seen in the fight. At the same time, top leaders of both the parties have also campaigned with full force for the candidates of SP and BJP. The credibility of state Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav will also be tested in the elections. A total of 3,99,259 voters will decide the fate of the candidates in the by-election to be held on November 20. There are 1,88,136 women and 2,11,105 male voters. On November 20, voting will be held at 442 booths of Majhwan Assembly. The polling parties will depart from Government Polytechnic College on 19th November. After voting on 20th November, counting of votes will take place on 23rd November. The district administration has also made complete preparations for the elections.

—BJP candidate has won this seat in the year 2017

In Majhwan Assembly by-election, BJP candidate Suchismita Maurya had won this seat in the 2017 assembly elections. Talking about the history of Majhwan seat, since 1952 till now, Congress has won this seat maximum eight times, BSP five times and BJP twice. SP has never been able to win this seat. In this election, party chief Akhilesh has made a big bet to overcome this obstacle. Keeping the caste equation in mind, he has fielded Dr. Jyoti Bind in the election race. Dr. Vinod Bind of Nishad Party had won from this seat in the 2022 assembly elections. Dr. Vinod Bind then got 103,235 votes. Rohit Shukla of SP stood second. He got 69,648 votes. This seat became vacant after Dr. Vinod Bind became MP from Bhadohi. At the same time, Jyoti Bind, daughter of Ramesh Bind, who is contesting the Mirzapur Lok Sabha elections from SP, faces the challenge of saving her father’s legacy after not getting the ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Bhadohi.
