Punjab Kings has declared Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of their team on Sunday, January 12. He will captain Punjab in IPL 2025 and thus create a new record in the history of Indian cricket. Iyer will become the first Indian cricketer to captain more than two IPL teams. Earlier, this achievement was in the names of only two foreign players.

IPL 2025 is scheduled to start on March 21. The Mohali-based franchise has bought Shreyas Iyer for Rs 26.75 crore. Iyer, as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders last year, made the team champion in 2024, but now he is not a part of the champion team. Interestingly, Shreyas Iyer is the 17th captain of Punjab Kings, and no other team has changed as many captains as Punjab Kings has done so far.

Shreyas Iyer has achieved the distinction of captaining three IPL teams while creating history in the IPL. He was the captain of Delhi Capitals from the middle of the 2018 season to 2020, leading the team to the finals once. After this, Iyer captained Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2022 and 2024. He is also the only captain in IPL history to play the final with two teams. Earlier, Mahela Jayawardene and Steve Smith had captained three different teams. Jayawardene captained Kings XI Punjab, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Delhi Daredevils, while Smith led Pune Warriors India, Rising Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals.
