After summoning comedian Kunal Kamra over his comments on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in his standup show, Naya Bharat, the Mumbai Police has now started sending out notices to the audience members who attended the show at The Habitat. Cops also reached Kamra’s old Mahim residence only to not find him there.

According to a report in Times of India, the Mumbai Police has started sending out notices and summoning those who attended Kamra’s Naya Bharat show, and is now recording their statements.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi slammed the police action on the audience, and took to her X handle to condemn it. “Feel sorry for what Mumbai Police has been reduced to because one coward neta’s ego is hurt (sic),” she wrote.

Meanwhile, Kamra on Monday mocked the authorities for visiting his Mahim residence, claiming that he has not even lived there for the past 10 years. “Going to an address where I haven’t lived for the last 10 Years is a waste of your time & public resources (sic),” he wrote on Instagram.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police sent out two notices to Kamra, dated March 25 and 26, asking him to appear at the Khar police station to record his statement on the entire fiasco that erupted over his parody song on Eknath Shinde. However, the comedian moved the Madras High Court, seeking interim bail, which he has now been granted till April 7, and thus, he skipped the Mumbai summons.

What is the Kunal Kamra controversy?

On March 23, Kamra dropped the video of his new standup act, titled Naya Bharat, in which he took a dig at India’s political system, particularly Maharashtra’s. During the act, he performed a satirical song on Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, and Shiv Sena workers claimed that the comedian called Shinde a “traitor”.

Shiv Sainiks then vandalised The Habitat, where Kamra had performed the act, and also threatened the comedian of dire consequences.

However, Kamra refused to apologise, and in his official statement, declared, “I will not apologize. What I said is exactly what Mr. Ajit Pawar (1st Deputy CM) said about Mr. Eknath Shinde (2nd Deputy CM). I don’t fear this mob, and I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down.”
